# FAQ

> Quick answers.

## The basics

> **Is it free?**
>
> Yes. It is open source under Apache 2.0.

> **Can it spend my Bitcoin?**
>
> No. It is watch-only. It never has your private keys or seed phrase.

> **Do I need a Hoseki account?**
>
> No.

> **Can Hoseki see my data?**
>
> No. Your data stays on your device. See [Privacy and security](https://help.bitcoincontrolcenter.com/privacy-security.md).

> **Do I need my own node?**
>
> No. You need an Electrum server. The desktop app starts on a public one. Your own is best for privacy.

> **Does it work on Intel Macs or Linux desktops?**
>
> Not yet. Use an Apple Silicon Mac, Windows x64, StartOS, or Umbrel.

> **Can I use it on my phone?**
>
> There is no mobile app. On StartOS or Umbrel, you can open the web interface in a phone browser. Hardware wallets need a computer.

## Accounts

> **Which wallets and exchanges work?**
>
> Ledger, Trezor, COLDCARD, Keystone, multisig, and any wallet by xpub or descriptor. Coinbase, Kraken, Robinhood, and Strike. Plus manual Bitcoin and ETFs. See [How accounts work](https://help.bitcoincontrolcenter.com/accounts/how-accounts-work.md).

> **What's the difference between pending and verified?**
>
> Both are tracked. Verified wallets have proven control by signing a message, so they can go on statements. See [Verify ownership](https://help.bitcoincontrolcenter.com/accounts/verify-ownership.md).

> **Does signing a message cost anything or move funds?**
>
> No. It's not a transaction. Nothing is broadcast.

> **Can I track testnet?**
>
> Not in the packaged apps. They are mainnet only.

> **Can I track other coins?**
>
> No. Control Center is Bitcoin only.

## Numbers and statements

> **Does it track cost basis or gains?**
>
> No. It tracks how much Bitcoin you hold over time. USD figures use today's price. See [Home and Portfolio](https://help.bitcoincontrolcenter.com/portfolio/home-and-portfolio.md).

> **Can I see balances in another currency?**
>
> Home and Portfolio show USD. Statements can use USD, CAD, GBP, or EUR.

> **Can I use a statement for taxes?**
>
> A statement shows your Bitcoin balances and transactions for a period. It is not tax advice or a tax form. Ask your tax professional what they need.

> **Why aren't my exchanges on my statement?**
>
> Statements cover self-custody wallets you've verified. Your exchange can provide its own statement.

## Data

> **What if I lose my computer?**
>
> Your coins are safe. Restore from a [backup](https://help.bitcoincontrolcenter.com/maintenance/backup-restore.md), or re-add your accounts.

> **Does it record history when it's closed?**
>
> No. It records balances about every 15 minutes while running. Wallet history is rebuilt from the blockchain when needed.

> **Is there dark mode?**
>
> Not yet.
